Intermediate level of English proficiency — what does it mean?

The English language is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. It is the language of global business, diplomacy, science, and technology. No wonder that more and more people are interested in learning it. However, as they start their language learning journey, they may come across such a term as «intermediate level.» But what does it mean exactly?

According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the intermediate level corresponds to the B1 and B2 levels. B1 level means that the learner is able to communicate in everyday situations, but still struggles with more complex language tasks. B2 level, on the other hand, indicates that the learner is already quite proficient and can handle more challenging language tasks, understand a variety of texts and express themselves fluently.

But the CEFR levels are not the only way to describe the intermediate level of English proficiency. Different language schools, tests, and textbooks may use different criteria, which can sometimes cause confusion. That’s why before choosing a course or a test, it’s important to check the specific requirements and expectations of the institution.

What are the characteristics of the intermediate level? Well, first of all, a learner at this level should be comfortable with basic grammar and vocabulary and should be able to use them in context. They should also be able to understand and use common idiomatic expressions, phrasal verbs, and colloquialisms. In terms of speaking and writing, they should be able to describe experiences, opinions, and plans, as well as ask and answer more complex questions.

If you are at the intermediate level, congratulations! You have already reached a significant milestone in your language learning journey. But even if you feel confident in your abilities, there is always room for improvement. You could try to challenge yourself by reading more complex texts, watching movies and series in English, participating in debates and discussions, or even writing a blog or a journal in English.

Remember that the intermediate level is not the end goal, but rather a stepping stone towards more advanced levels of proficiency. With dedication, practice, and patience, you can continue to improve your skills and become a confident and proficient English speaker.
